A Qualitative Study on the User Experience of Manual/Electric Hybrid Wheelchairs in Leisure Activity Participation : Focusing on Focus Group Interview

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study was to understand the user’s usage experience through a focus group interview and to find out what factors to consider when developing manual/power hybrid wheelchairs and prescribing manual/power hybrid wheelchairs by clinicians. Methods: Five people with disabilities who have used manual/power hybrid wheelchairs were recruited. Interview questions were based on the questionnaire presented by Krueger & Casey. Conversational data were transcribed independently by three authors. The transcribed data were then analyzed in accord with the procedures presented by Braun and Clarke. Results: The subjects conducted various activities in the community, including occupational activities, leisure activities, and overseas activities. However, wheelchair users reported problems with wheelchair propulsion structures, supporting structures, and materials. Thus, they hoped to improve the existing manual/power hybrid wheelchair problems, and to include accessories such as chest belts and anti-tippers for safe driving. As a result of the study, opinions on the safety of manual/powered hybrid wheelchairs for active leisure participation were particularly emphasized. Conclusion: This study presented the experiences of manual/power hybrid wheelchair users during leisure and social participation activities from the perspective of clinicians. This study will serve as the basis for the development of highly effective assistive technology devices.
